Lichtjes in het Donker

Lichtjes in het Donker is a volunteer-led foundation that creates space for people to remember and honour loved ones who have died. Based around the Oosterbegraafplaats in Alphen aan den Rijn, the organisation holds an annual remembrance programme during the first week of November. Its central gathering, also called Lichtjes in het Donker, brings visitors together in a warm, welcoming setting to share memories and acknowledge their loss in their own way.

The programme includes music, singing, dance, remembrance photos, children’s activities and meaningful rituals. Throughout the week, visitors can also take part in moments of reflection, such as Hemelpost and the Bloemenhart, or pause for a conversation over coffee or tea. A photo gallery in the cemetery’s hall displays submitted images of deceased loved ones, giving families another way to honour their memories.

The foundation’s work is carried out by volunteers and supported by partners and sponsors. Visitors can contribute through donations, which help the organisation provide this annual remembrance event.
