About of Little River Museum
Little River Museum is a community museum dedicated to the history, people, and natural heritage of Little River and the surrounding Mendocino County coast in California. Its exhibits invite visitors to explore the area from Albion and Whitesboro to Big River, with a free self-guided tour that brings local stories and landscapes into focus.
The collections cover coast pioneers, local Pomo life, the pioneer cemetery, logging in the late 1800s, the Mendocino Woodlands, local wildlife, and trains and toys. Visitors can learn about Northern Pomo coastal life before pioneer settlement, use a free Pomo trail map, and listen to recordings of the spoken Pomo language. A hands-on wildlife exhibit features local animals and signs of their presence, while historical photographs reveal changing landscapes and pioneer life.
The museum also supports local history research through genealogy resources and digital transcriptions of journals, diaries, and letters written by Little River pioneers, including Civil War letters. Additional offerings include cemetery information and puzzles for sale.
