Fossil methane is a critical environmental concern, especially highlighted by recent studies on Svalbard's glaciers. The iC3 Polar Research Hub, led by researchers like Gabrielle Kleber, conducted an extensive survey of 19 glacier rivers in central Svalbard, discovering that all river samples were supersaturated with fossil methane at concentrations up to 425 times higher than atmospheric levels. This influx of methane, primarily originating from thermogenic processes, is linked to the thawing of glacier beds over ancient organic-rich shale.

The implications of these findings are significant. The research estimates that Svalbard's land-terminating glaciers could potentially release between 182 to 368 tonnes of methane annually, equating to emissions comparable to those produced by a herd of over 3,000 cows. As warming climates continue to thaw these glaciers, the feedback mechanisms involved could lead to increased methane emissions, further exacerbating climate change. This research not only provides vital data for understanding global methane output but also emphasizes the broader environmental impacts of glacier melt in the context of climate change.
