The Living Planet Index (LPI) is a biodiversity indicator that tracks changes in monitored populations of vertebrate species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. Developed from population time series collected at sites around the world, it provides a way to assess the state of biological diversity and communicate trends over time. The index covers thousands of species and populations; the site reports 5,790 species and 35,803 populations. The LPI was adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity as an indicator for progress towards its 2011โ2020 targets and is included in the post-2020 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The Living Planet Index website offers access to the latest results, the Living Planet Database and research resources. Users can search and download data, contribute population data, and consult information on data use, indicator development, sensitivity tests, bias and threats. The site also presents national, regional and thematic indicators, explains how the index relates to policy, and provides publications and materials including the Living Planet Report and its technical supplement.
