About Lawrence Journal-World
Lawrence Journal is a reputable brand that provides comprehensive news, information, headlines, and events in Lawrence, Kansas. They are dedicated to keeping the community informed, engaged, and up-to-date on the latest happenings. Recently, Lawrence Journal reported the exciting news of Panasonic's $4 billion battery plant in nearby De Soto.
With 4,000 jobs up for grabs, there has been curiosity about who will fill these positions. To gain more insights into the impacts of this project, a group of area leaders, including local economic development officials and representatives from KU, K-State, and the Kansas Department of Commerce, visited Panasonic's battery plant in Nevada. The tour shed light on several aspects of the plant.
The factory positions are expected to offer 12-hour shifts with two or three days off, making it a rewarding yet demanding work environment. Moreover, the plants will focus on maintaining a clean and eco-friendly atmosphere, with a strong emphasis on recycling. Panasonic is expected to actively recruit both high school graduates and individuals with a technical background, offering a range of job opportunities for different skill sets.
The factory positions are projected to pay $20 to $25 per hour, and the company plans to hire at least 200 employees per month by 2024. Production of batteries for electric vehicles is set to commence in the first quarter of 2025. Apart from the direct job creation, the Panasonic plant is also expected to attract related industries, particularly those involved in recycling.
The tour showcased a large recycling facility in Nevada, employing 800 individuals and expanding rapidly to keep up with the need for recycled materials. This development hints at potential economic growth and diversification in the area surrounding the De Soto plant. While the Nevada plant uses buses to transport employees, it remains uncertain if a similar system will be employed in De Soto.
However, the De Soto facility has better access to a major road network, which may require improvements, especially on Kansas Highway 10. Area leaders advocate for an expanded infrastructure to support the expected growth and traffic. Overall, Lawrence Journal remains committed to providing timely updates and comprehensive coverage on the exciting developments surrounding the Panasonic battery plant, ensuring that the community stays informed about the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead
