About Lobos de Iracema
Lobos de Iracema is a research and conservation project dedicated to protecting maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in the Cerrado of inland São Paulo, Brazil. Its work focuses on a 179-square-kilometre study area spanning Iracemápolis, Santa Gertrudes, Cordeirópolis, Limeira and Piracicaba, where 17 maned wolves have been catalogued so far. The project combines active monitoring, individual identification, behavioral observation and the study of tracks and other signs. It also uses DNA from fecal samples to learn more about the animals and their population.
Alongside scientific research, Lobos de Iracema works to reduce threats and promote coexistence between wildlife and local communities. Its educational resources address issues such as road collisions, disease, feeding wild animals and preventing conflicts with domestic animals. The project invites the public to support its work through one-time or recurring donations, which fund DNA analyses, monitoring expeditions and environmental education materials. It also provides a way to report maned wolf sightings, helping connect community observations with conservation efforts.
