About LOINC
LOINC, which stands for Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes, is the world's most widely used terminology standard for health measurements, observations, and documents. It was initiated in 1994 by Clem McDonald at Regenstrief Institute, a non-profit medical research organization. LOINC was developed to address the need for a common language in the electronic transmission of clinical data.
Most laboratories and clinical services use HL7 to send their results electronically, but the tests are identified by idiosyncratic code values. LOINC solves this problem by providing universal codes and names that serve as a lingua franca for identifying tests and observations. LOINC is a comprehensive catalog of health measurements, including laboratory tests, clinical measures, standardized survey instruments, and more.
It enables the exchange and aggregation of clinical results for care delivery, outcomes management, and research by providing a set of universal codes and structured names. LOINC contains concepts for a wide range of measurements, with additional details such as synonyms, units of measure, and descriptions. For healthcare professionals and researchers, LOINC serves as the go-to resource for interoperable data exchange and standardized identification of health measurements and observations
