About Lost Americana
Lost Americana is a poignant photo and video documentary focused on the population decline in rural America, created by photographer and filmmaker Vincent D. Johnson. The project captures the essence of nostalgia through depictions of abandoned structures, vintage automobiles, and remnants of agricultural life, illustrating the dramatic shift from a nation once dominated by farming to one increasingly detached from its rural roots. With an extensive collection of thousands of images and footage gathered from across 24 states, Lost Americana serves as a record of the bygone era, showcasing the impact of rural depopulation.
Johnson, a graduate of Columbia College's renowned photojournalism program, merges his love for Americana with storytelling, aiming to highlight both the past and present of rural communities. Through the documentary and the accompanying book, he invites viewers to reflect on the stories and landscapes that define Americaโs heartland, while encouraging community connection by sharing personal experiences related to this shared heritage. Support for the project comes from the purchase of photography, with all profits funding the documentary's creation.
