About Waterfront Park Lou
Waterfront Park is both a non-profit organization and a public park located in Louisville, Kentucky. As a gateway to the city, we offer a unique connection between the community and the Ohio River. Our mission is to preserve and develop a space that can be enjoyed by all, forever.
Once a desolate area of abandoned buildings and scrap yards, Waterfront Park has transformed into a vibrant 85-acre green space. With over 2. 2 million visitors annually, we host some of Louisville's most exciting celebrations, including the Fourth of July at Waterfront Park, Forecastle Festival, and WFPK Waterfront Wednesdays.
Whether you prefer a serene stroll, a bike ride, a yoga session, or simply enjoying the breathtaking view of the city from the iconic Big Four Bridge, there is something for everyone at Waterfront Park. As the most utilized urban park in Louisville, we bring our community together to celebrate our shared sense of belonging. We rely on the generosity of our supporters and the public through donations to maintain and expand Waterfront Park for everyone’s enjoyment.
Our history dates back to the early 1800s when river travel played a crucial role in connecting Louisville to the wider world. However, the construction of the I-64 highway in the 1960s created a physical barrier between the city and the waterfront. Efforts to reconnect the city and the river began in the 1930s but didn't materialize until 1992 when the Waterfront Development Corporation was formed to oversee the redevelopment of Louisville's riverfront.
Since then, Waterfront Park has become a catalyst for residential and business growth in the area. With completion of Phases I, II, and III, and plans for Phase IV, Waterfront Park continues to enrich Louisville's quality of life. We invite you to join us in supporting and experiencing the beauty, fun, and connection that the waterfront has to offer
