About LOWVELO
LOWVELO is a community-driven cycling and fundraising initiative based in Charleston, South Carolina. Its name combines “Lowcountry” and “velo,” the French word for bicycle, reflecting its local roots and focus on bringing people together through movement and service. Since 2019, LOWVELO has united riders, volunteers, virtual participants, sponsors, and community partners to support lifesaving cancer research at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Every participant-raised dollar benefits cancer research.
The annual ride features five routes through Lowcountry landscapes, with options for stationary cycling and the virtual LOWVELO Home Team, where people can cycle, walk, or run from anywhere. Participants can register, donate to a rider or team, support the general fund, or volunteer. LOWVELO also hosts events throughout the year, including training rides and activities that help participants prepare, connect, and build healthier habits. Ride-weekend experiences include a packet pickup party and finish-line celebration, while the broader program promotes cancer prevention and awareness and honors survivors and loved ones lost.
