About Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem
The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is a particular Catholic Church that serves as the spiritual and administrative center for Christians in Cyprus, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. Supported by six Vicariates, the Latin Patriarchate provides essential services and support to Christian communities across these countries. The current Patriarch of Jerusalem, Mgr Pierbattista Pizzaballa, has been serving since November 6, 2020.
With a rich and complex history intertwined with that of Jerusalem itself, the Latin Patriarchate has played a significant role in preserving Christian presence and heritage in the Holy Land. From the time of the Crusades, the Friars Minor, known as the Franciscans, were entrusted with the task of safeguarding the Holy Places. The restoration of the Latin Patriarchate was later championed by the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith (Propaganda Fide), aiming to combat the influence of other religious groups and ensure the well-being of Christians in the region.
Today, the Latin Patriarchate continues its mission to serve and support the Christian communities in the Holy Land
