About LSST DESC
The LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) is an international scientific community focused on using data from the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) to make precise measurements of fundamental cosmological parameters. With more than 1,450 members across over 27 countries, the collaboration brings researchers together to advance methods for extracting robust cosmological constraints from the survey’s extensive data.
DESC supports the science goals of the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which will conduct the ten-year LSST using its 3.2-gigapixel camera and 8.4-meter Simonyi Survey Telescope. The collaboration develops high-throughput software pipelines to simulate, reprocess, and analyze images and catalogs at the scale required by LSST. It also fosters an inclusive, respectful research environment and encourages members to learn from one another through activities such as its Dark Energy School.
DESC shares its research through published papers, projects, software, public data resources, and a data portal, and provides ways to join the collaboration or request a speaker. It acknowledges support from US and international science organizations.
