Lumiraja

Lumiraja provides FINLAV-aligned avalanche safety training for professionals and recreational users, with courses arranged on request and tailored to each group. Based in Äkäslompolo, Ylläs, the organisation serves authorities, volunteers, ski instructors and guides, ski resort employees, and others who need avalanche safety skills. Professional courses include FINLAV Pro 1 and a FINLAV rescue course, supporting safe and effective responses to avalanche incidents and better customer safety during off-piste activities.

For recreational participants, Lumiraja offers Avalanche Safety 1 and 2. The 16-hour Level 1 course covers avalanche basics, avalanche terrain and hazard, companion rescue, safe route selection, and decision-making. The 32-hour Level 2 course builds on Level 1 or equivalent knowledge, developing deeper understanding of conditions and avalanche danger, terrain recognition, rescue skills, route selection, and decisions.

Training is delivered by FINLAV instructors Joonas and Kati Kortelainen, whose backgrounds include avalanche rescue, ski instruction, and wilderness first aid. Lumiraja invites organisations and groups to get in touch to plan a course suited to their needs.
