The LUPUS Institute for Wolf Monitoring and Research in Germany is dedicated to studying and monitoring the natural recolonization of wolves in the country. It conducts wolf monitoring in Saxony and Southeast Brandenburg on behalf of the State Office for Environment, Agriculture, and Geology (LfULG) and the State Office for Environment, Brandenburg. Additionally, as part of the Federal Information and Advisory Center on Wolves (DBBW), it provides professional guidance on wolf monitoring and behavior to other German states.
Founded in 2002 as the "Wildbiologisches Büro LUPUS" by biologists Gesa Kluth and Ilka Reinhardt, the institute continues to be led by them. Located in Spreewitz, in the heart of the Oberlausitz region, where wolves first gave birth to pups in 2000, it is an expert resource on wolf-related inquiries and herd protection in Saxony. The institute's main focus is on scientifically supporting and researching the natural recolonization process.
