About LWL-Museum Hellerlecht
The LWL Open-Air Museum Detmold, officially the LWL Museum Hellerlecht, is a Westphalian museum of cultural history in Detmold, Germany. Set across more than 90 hectares of historic cultural landscape, it brings together 120 original historic buildings from across the region to show how people in Westphalia-Lippe lived and worked over the past 500 years. Visitors can explore recreated farmsteads and villages representing different places and periods, from rural life between 1800 and 1860 to communities in the early and mid-20th century.
The museum also presents annual special exhibitions on everyday culture, connecting household objects with selected works of art and cultural artefacts. Its programme includes guided tours, workshops, craft demonstrations in historic workshops, and activities for children, families, school groups and other visitors. On-site facilities include restaurants and bistros, a museum bakery and a shop, while digital offerings include a museum app and an online collection.
The museum provides visitor information and accessibility resources, including content in plain language and German Sign Language
