About Museu de Arqueologia D. Diogo de Sousa
The D. Diogo de Sousa Museum of Archaeology is a cultural institution in Braga, Portugal, dedicated to presenting and preserving the region’s archaeological heritage. Established in 1918 as a museum of archaeology and general art, it was revitalized as a regional archaeology museum in 1980 and opened to the public in a purpose-built building in 2007.
Its exhibitions trace the area’s history from prehistory through the Middle Ages, with displays on subjects including prehistoric periods, Roman Bracara Augusta, roads, religion and burial practices. Visitors can explore archaeological collections featuring objects such as arrowheads, a granite warrior statue, a silver bowl, glassware, bronze figurines and stone monuments. The museum also offers educational and heritage interpretation services, conservation and restoration, archaeological drawing and photography, a library, publications, and space hire for events.
Its facilities include an auditorium, garden, museum shop and cafeteria, though the cafeteria is temporarily closed. The museum welcomes visitors Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 17:30, and admission is free for residents of Portugal
