About The Magistrates' Association
The Magistrates' Association is a renowned brand that plays a vital role in the legal system. As the largest contributor to the judiciary, they have a significant impact on the criminal, family, and youth courts. Magistrates, also known as Justices of the Peace, are everyday individuals who sit on benches of three.
They make fair decisions, following structured processes like sentencing guidelines and case law. The Presiding Justice, specially trained to act as chair, represents the collective voice of the magistrates in court. These dedicated individuals come from diverse backgrounds, with no need for legal qualifications as comprehensive training is provided.
Magistrates must possess qualities such as good character, sound judgement, social awareness, and effective communication. This voluntary role requires a commitment of at least 26 half-day sittings (equivalent to 13 days) per year, with expenses conveniently claimable. The Magistrates' Association offers extensive support, including training, a membership magazine, diversity and inclusion networks, and a support line.
For those interested in becoming a magistrate, the Magistrates' Association provides all the necessary information and guidelines. By joining this esteemed association, you will contribute to the collective voice that upholds justice in communities across the country
