Maibaumverein Untergiesing

Maibaumverein Untergiesing, formally Bürgervereinigung Maibaum Untergiesing e.V., is a community association in Munich’s Untergiesing district. Founded around the local Maibaum tradition, the association works to preserve this centuries-old Bavarian custom while bringing people together and supporting neighborhood life. Its Maibaum has stood at Hans-Mielich-Platz since 1978. Members celebrate a Maifest each year on May 1 and, every five years, organize the raising of a new maypole.

The association’s activities extend beyond the tree itself. It hosts cultural events, offers educational activities, and carries out charitable initiatives intended to strengthen community connections and contribute to life in the district. The annual festival features music, food and drinks, and a children’s program, creating an opportunity for residents and visitors to celebrate together. People can get involved by joining the association, volunteering, or supporting its work through donations and sponsorship. Maibaumverein Untergiesing presents the maypole as a symbol of spring, renewal, growth, good fortune, and solidarity, and aims to keep the tradition meaningful for the local community.
