About Maketu Ongatoro Wetland Society
Maketū Wetland Society (MOWS) is a community conservation organisation in New Zealand dedicated to protecting, preserving and enhancing the natural environment. Established in 2008 by local residents concerned about the New Zealand dotterel colony on Maketū Spit, the society has continued its work since 2009, with a long-term focus on restoring native biodiversity across the lower Kaituna River, Maketū Estuary, Waihi Estuary and surrounding areas.
MOWS undertakes ecological restoration and conservation projects at locations including Maketū Spit, Newdick’s Beach, Dotterel Point at Pukehina, Papahikahawai Island, Pukehina Esplanade Reserve and nearby wetlands. Its services include animal and plant pest control, biodiversity monitoring and habitat restoration. The society also develops five-year Environmental Programmes with community Care Groups, supported by regional and local funding partners.
Education is another core part of its work. Since 2015, MOWS has delivered a programme with schools in Te Puke, Maketū, Paengaroa, Pongakawa and Pukehina. Community members can support its efforts by joining, donating or taking part in regular working bees and restoration work days.
