Making Aces Tennis is a welcoming tennis and sports coaching organisation based in Colchester, founded in 2007 by James Barnard, known as Barney. Operating from Spring Lane Tennis Club, which has eight courts, the club aims to make tennis inclusive and enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities, without an elitist atmosphere.
Its services include weekly tennis lessons for children and adults, group coaching and individual one-to-one sessions. The team also organises friendly tennis tournaments during school holidays, offering players an approachable introduction to competition. For children aged 5–12, Making Aces runs multi-sport holiday camps featuring activities such as tennis, football and dodgeball. Summer highlights include the club’s popular Waterfight Wednesdays.
Coaching is led by qualified staff, including LTA Level 3 and Level 4 coaches who are LTA Accredited Plus. The coaches also hold first-aid qualifications and have safeguarding training and current DBS checks. Making Aces welcomes newcomers to try a lesson, enter a tournament or join a holiday camp, with an emphasis on fun, confidence and participation.
