Makoto JKA

Makoto JKA is a Shotokan Karate school serving Montreal’s West Island, offering students the opportunity to train in the Japan Karate Association (JKA) tradition. The school is led by Sensei Hakim Ishmael, whose karate journey began in Guyana at age 16. After moving to Canada in 1982, he explored dojos in Montreal and found the JKA. He adapted his previous karate experience to meet the association’s standards, took part in numerous JKA competitions, and attained the rank of 3rd Dan Black Belt through sustained effort and dedication.

Makoto JKA presents karate as more than a sport: its JKA approach emphasizes harmonizing mind and body while developing balance, strength, perseverance, patience, confidence, and self-mastery. The school’s website also shares information about Shotokan’s history, tracing influences from China and Okinawa and the development of unarmed martial arts. Visitors can explore the school’s history and gallery, learn about training, and contact the dojo for further information.
