About Mallaig Heritage
Mallaig Heritage Centre is a local history museum and archive dedicated to West Lochaber, the people who have shaped it, and its distinctive landscape. Located beside Mallaig railway station, the Centre presents stories, films, collections and displays that explore the region’s history, from its early connections with Picts, Norsemen and Scots to the Lordship of the Isles and the Jacobite period. Exhibitions cover subjects including fishing, the Mallaig Railway, steamers and ferries, the lifeboat, the Great War, artist Jon Schueler and life around the lochs known as the Rough Bounds.
Visitors can explore the Centre’s collection catalogue, oral history interviews, census returns and other research resources. The Centre also provides research facilities and services for schools, and offers publications through its shop. Its website shares local information, exhibition features, community portraits and a forum, helping visitors and residents discover more about the area. By preserving and presenting local heritage, Mallaig Heritage Centre offers an engaging introduction to the history and character of West Lochaber.
