About MallHistories
Histories of the National Mall is an innovative digital resource designed to explore the rich historical tapestry of one of America's most iconic public spaces. Launched in 2014, the site offers a comprehensive tour of the National Mall’s past, featuring interactive historical maps, timelines of significant events, and biographical sketches of influential figures related to this landmark. Users can dive into various themes such as everyday life in Washington, arts and culture, political movements, and the evolution of memorials and museums.
Optimized for both mobile devices and desktop browsing, the site allows visitors to engage with the Mall’s history seamlessly, whether exploring on-site or from home. The initiative was developed by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has been recognized with an award for Outstanding Public History Project in 2015. Connect with the project on social media to share your experiences and discover more about the National Mall's storied heritage.
