About Mammals
Encyclopedia of Animals is a Windows software application designed to help users organize and manage information about the animal world. Its modular structure uses three XML-based content databases, allowing information to be maintained separately while bringing related data together in the interface. Users can build hierarchical taxonomies and store records for animal classifications, species, and genera. The software supports mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians; fish are listed as a planned addition.
Features include links to IUCN information using identification numbers, one-click searches through Google, Wikipedia, and Flickr, and support for attachments of any size. Users can also import and export data, while the XML database format allows flexible handling of records. The application does not come with a complete set of animal data, so users compile their own collections. A platypus example adapted from Wikipedia is provided to help newcomers understand the program and get started. Encyclopedia of Animals offers a focused tool for organizing wildlife information, rather than a pre-populated reference library.
