About Mana Mokopuna
Mana Mokopuna - Children and Young People's Commission is an independent advocate for all 1. 2 million mokopuna aged under 18 in Aotearoa. Established in July 2023, with a historical commitment dating back to 1989, Mana Mokopuna advocates for children's rights, provides advice to government agencies, initiates system-level changes, amplifies children's voices, and monitors facilities where young people are detained.
Led by Chief Children’s Commissioner Dr. Claire Achmad, the Commission focuses on ensuring mokopuna's voices are heard in decision-making processes. Dr.
Julie Wharewera-Mika, Donna Matahaere-Atariki, Ronelle Baker, and Josiah Tualamali’i join Dr. Achmad as Children’s Commissioners, collectively bringing diverse expertise to the table. With a vision for all children to thrive regardless of their background, Mana Mokopuna is dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment where mokopuna can flourish and reach their full potential
