Mana Whaikaha is a groundbreaking prototype of a new disability support system, currently being tested in the MidCentral DHB region. This system aims to empower disabled individuals and their whanau (extended family) by providing them with increased choice and control over their supports. Mana Whaikaha is funded by the New Zealand Government through the Ministry of Health.
With a vision to enhance the lives of disabled people, Mana Whaikaha focuses on promoting strength, dignity, and life essence (known as mana and mauri respectively) through its innovative approach. The system adopts the Enabling Good Lives philosophy, which places importance on giving individuals the freedom to choose the support they receive. The Ministry of Health embraces a try, learn and adjust approach to continually improve Mana Whaikaha, based on users' feedback.
To evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the system over time, an outcomes evaluation is being conducted. With support services including disability support, equipment, and advocacy, Mana Whaikaha is revolutionizing the way disability support is provided in New Zealand
