About Mandela House
Mandela House, located at 8115 Orlando West in Soweto, Johannesburg, is a deeply historical and significant brand woven into the fabric of South African history. Built in 1945 as part of a Johannesburg City tender, this small yet powerful structure became the residence of Nelson Mandela and his family. Mandela House stands as a testament to the immense struggle for a free South Africa.
Although Mandela's years were consumed by the fight against apartheid, his second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, faced public harassment, torture, and imprisonment, etching their experiences into the walls of the home. In 1988, the house was tragically destroyed by a fire but was later rebuilt with the help of the community. Today, Mandela House is a public heritage site and museum, awarded this status in 1999, with Nelson Mandela as the Founder Trustee.
Visitors from around the world flock to Vilakazi Street, home to Mandela House and iconic landmarks such as Archbishop Tutu's residence and the memorial of Hector Pietersen. In 2008, Mandela House underwent a major restoration and conservation project to preserve its historical significance for future generations. Substantial fundraising and contributions from corporations and CSI units ensured the successful completion of this project.
Immerse yourself in the rich history of Mandela House and the struggle for freedom in South Africa. Experience the spirit of resilience and hope that resonates within its walls
