The Mandela Mining Precinct is a public-private collaboration between the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Minerals Council of South Africa. Their main goal is to revitalize mining research, development, and innovation in South Africa, ensuring the sustainability of the industry. The precinct implements the South African Mining Extraction, Research, Development, and Innovation (SAMERDI) strategy through six research-based programs: Longevity of Current Mines, Mechanised Mining Systems, Advanced Orebody Knowledge, Real-time Information Management Systems, Successful Application of Technologies Centred Around People (SATCAP).

Established in 2018, the Mandela Mining Precinct is a tribute to the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, and his legacy of bringing people together to solve challenges. The precinct symbolizes collaboration and support for the mining industry, represented by the hardhat and supportive hands in the colors of the South African flag. They provide a platform for industry professionals and stakeholders to work collaboratively towards solving the challenges facing the mining industry.
