About Mannen van de Maze
Mannen van de Maze is a historical and genealogical research project documenting the crews of ships belonging to the Rotterdam Admiralty between 1763 and 1795. Initiated by researcher and author Arjen Buikstra and Wonka Books, the project transcribes names from known crew payment rolls and makes them searchable online. Its database helps genealogists investigate seafaring ancestors, with records organized around people, families, ships, places, dates, and historical sources.
Because names were often recorded phonetically, and the site preserves the spellings found in the original rolls, searches may require trying alternate spellings. The project also shares historical context through media, documents, stories, statistics, and links to related maritime resources. A featured subject is the warship Mars and its 418 crew members, whose experiences included a devastating hurricane near Sint Eustatius, combat with English ships, and captivity.
The site connects this story to a book about the Mars’s final voyage, based on historical accounts and personal records. Visitors can search the collection and contribute information about crew members through the contact form
