Mapcode is an open, free location-addressing system developed and promoted by the Mapcode Foundation, a non-profit foundation established in the Netherlands. It gives locations around the world short, easy-to-share codes that can identify a place to within a few feet or metres, and can be used online or offline. The codes are designed to be simple, distinctive and reliable, helping people locate homes, properties and other sites where conventional addresses may be unavailable or imprecise.
Users can generate a mapcode through the online demo by entering an address, postal code or latitude and longitude, and can also look up the address and location associated with an existing code. The free Mapcode Finder app is available for iOS and Android. Developers and businesses can integrate the system using open-source software libraries, algorithms and documentation, without licence fees or commercial terms.
Mapcodes are used or considered for applications including emergency response, postal addressing, utility-asset identification, archaeological records and land management.
