MARBLES is a five-year, โฌ7.5 million EU-funded research project focused on harnessing marine microorganisms for drug discovery and the sustainable production of fish and crops. It brings together an interdisciplinary consortium to explore marine microbes as sources of novel antimicrobial agents and bioprotectants for aquaculture and agriculture. Through nine work packages, the project addresses the full pathway from identifying bacteria and their active molecules to extracting useful ingredients sustainably and effectively, while also examining the commercial and regulatory challenges involved in moving discoveries from the laboratory to market.
The project develops methods for the sustainable collection and use of biological resources from marine environments and evaluates their commercial potential. Its expected results include improving the use of marine microbes as a sustainable resource for discovering drugs and developing bioprotectants against diseases affecting farmed aquatic species and agricultural crops. MARBLES shares information about its work, consortium, events, results, and resources through its website.
