PENHA, the Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa, is a development organisation working to strengthen pastoral and agro-pastoral communities and support sustainable livelihoods. Its mission combines gender equality, resilience building, enterprise, innovation and regional cooperation. PENHA draws on action-oriented research and experience in project implementation, gender studies and policy advocacy, working across the Horn of Africa and through development education and youth activities in the UK.

The organisation addresses climate change and environmental pressures, conflict prevention, women’s empowerment, humanitarian response, economic development, migration and youth development, and water, sanitation and hygiene. Its programmes include research on climate impacts on food security and livelihoods, training and workshops on resource-based conflict, and support for women’s participation in economic and public life. PENHA also provides workshops in animal husbandry and agriculture, promotes animal welfare, and engages young people in the Horn of Africa and the UK. It works with local and international partners, supporting communities and their institutions to take an active role in their own development.
