Marieke De Hoop

Marieke de Hoop is a Rotterdam-based papermaker who has devoted more than 40 years to the craft. Working by hand with traditional techniques, she creates distinctive papers and explores how natural, locally sourced materials and waste can be transformed into sustainable materials. Through PapierLab Rotterdam, she helps people experiment with papermaking, develop ideas and test new approaches to material creation. The lab also hosts workshops and events for those interested in learning and creating together.

Marieke’s projects include Papier van Asperges, which turns asparagus peelings into unique sheets ranging from thick to translucent. The project also inspired two lamps made with asparagus paper: Lamperge, designed by Isaac Monté, and Asparagus Lumen, designed by Rik van Veen; both are available to buy through the website. Her offerings extend beyond materials to the origami theater, an interactive performance that invites guests to share drawings and watch them folded into paper figures. Through her stories, teaching, workshops and creative collaborations, Marieke shares the beauty and possibilities of papermaking.
