About WoRMS
WoRMS is the World Register of Marine Species, an authoritative and comprehensive database that provides a list of names of marine organisms along with information on synonymy. The main aim of WoRMS is to serve as a guide to interpret taxonomic literature by including valid names as well as other names in use. The content of WoRMS is managed by taxonomic and thematic experts, ensuring the quality and accuracy of the information.
WoRMS is part of the Aphia platform, an infrastructure designed to capture taxonomic and related data. It contains over 400 fields spread across different modules such as taxonomy, distribution, traits, vernacular names, and more. Aphia uses the Life Science Identifiers (LSIDs) to provide stable and unique identifiers for each name in the database, enabling easy quality control and linking of information.
It also allows interactions with other biodiversity databases, making it an important player in the field of biodiversity informatics. WoRMS combines data from various authoritative marine species lists, making it a valuable resource for researchers, scientists, and enthusiasts interested in marine organisms. With continuous updates and a robust management system, WoRMS ensures that the information remains current and reliable
