Marion Bloem is a Dutch writer, filmmaker and visual artist whose work spans literature, film, television, radio and art. Since her debut novel, Geen gewoon Indisch meisje, published in 1983, she has become an acclaimed author. Her literary career was recognised with the Constantijn Huygens Prize for her complete body of work, awarded in 2023.
Bloem’s writing includes novels and fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, travel writing and poetry, including her distinctive “visuverzen. ” Her work explores themes such as identity, memory, love and personal history, as reflected in INDO, her 2020 book about identity. Her latest book, Verkleed in vreugde, is a moving and often humorous account of her 52-year relationship with Ivan Wolffers, his illness and death, and her experience of grief.
Alongside her books, Bloem creates feature films and documentaries, and develops artistic and media projects. She also brings her work to audiences through interviews, presentations and a theatre tour, with live performances accompanied by bassist Doraly Vermeulen
