The Market Theatre

The Market Theatre is a Johannesburg performing arts organisation and live theatre destination, presenting a varied programme of plays and cultural events. Its productions include new work, adaptations and premieres, with stories exploring subjects such as family, memory, mental health, justice and the lives of artists. The theatre also hosts the Kippies Fringe, a curated programme of performances at Kippies, and shares event information, ticket links and programme updates through its website.

Beyond performances, the Market Theatre offers services for visitors and creative productions, including theatre tours, venue hire, and costume and props hire. Its broader activities include programmes, publications and initiatives such as the Mr Duiker Programme, alongside annual reports and strategic planning materials. The organisation also provides information about its history, vision, staff and Market Square, reflecting a role that extends beyond staging shows. With a changing calendar of events and practical services for audiences and theatre-makers, the Market Theatre connects people with live performance and supports the creation and presentation of theatrical work in Johannesburg.
