Kensyukai Markham, formerly known as Markham Kendo Club, is a not-for-profit club in Markham dedicated to teaching kendo, the Japanese martial art known as the way of the sword. Founded in 2010 by Hideki Sumi, Kyoshi 7th Dan, the club is led by head instructor Lawrence Tsuji, 6th Dan. Its approach reflects kendo’s principle of developing human character through the practice of swordsmanship.
The club welcomes new students, including children aged eight and older, and offers information for beginners and new members. Prospective students can contact the club to arrange an orientation and learn more about getting started, registration, membership fees, and the children’s program. Kensyukai Markham also shares club news and event schedules, along with resources for kendoka.
The club is in good standing with Kendo Ontario and the Canadian Kendo Federation, which is a member of the International Kendo Federation. Through its instruction and community activities, Kensyukai Markham provides an opportunity for people in the area to learn and practise kendo.
