Mary Carmel’s Light is a North Carolina-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting people with low vision or blindness who experience Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). Founded by siblings Eva and Kevin Potts in honor of their mother, Mary Carmel Potts McCoy, the organization works to ensure that people affected by CBS and those around them can find reliable information, understanding, and support.
The organization raises awareness of CBS and provides education and resources for individuals seeking information or a diagnosis, as well as for caregivers, families, friends, and medical providers. Its work includes support-group participation, educational materials, information for healthcare professionals, data collection, and civil engagement. Mary Carmel’s Light also helps caregivers find resources and offers consulting support, though it does not provide medical referrals.
Weekly CBS support groups meet on Saturdays, followed by a caregiver group, with participation arranged by phone. Through its programs and outreach, Mary Carmel’s Light aims to reduce fear and misunderstanding, encourage appropriate assessment, and help people affected by CBS live with dignity, grace, and inclusion.
