MATSim is an open-source framework for large-scale, agent-based transport simulation, developed and maintained by its contributors and the MATSim Association. It models the movements of people and vehicles across road and public transport networks, allowing researchers, planners and transport organizations to explore how travel behavior may respond to changing conditions. Each simulated person, or agent, seeks to optimize their daily activities and trips while interacting with other agents. Through an iterative optimization process, MATSim produces dynamic simulations of whole days at second-by-second resolution.
The software supports private and public transport modes, including cars, transit, walking, cycling and demand-responsive transport. It can handle detailed scenarios for large metropolitan areas, and its modular design lets users adapt, extend or replace algorithms and functionality. Users can work with preprocessed results or extract their own performance indicators from detailed simulation output.
MATSim offers installation guidance, documentation, examples and support channels, and welcomes code contributions through GitHub.
