Maunga Hikurangi Tours offers Ngāti Porou-guided experiences to Maunga Hikurangi, the sacred mountain of Ngāti Porou and the first point on mainland Aotearoa to greet the sunrise. Based in Ruatoria, the tour company takes small groups up the mountain by 4WD, sharing the area’s landscapes, Māori history, and stories of the people who call it home. Visitors encounter nine monumental whakairo (carvings) and learn about the mountain’s cultural significance as a living ancestor and the resting place of Māui’s waka.
The company offers three guided tours: Te Urunga-Tu, a five-hour sunrise experience; Haramai, a four-hour daytime tour; and Te Urunga-Pae, a five-hour sunset experience featuring kōrero, karakia, and a warm drink. Each tour is limited to seven people, with a minimum group size of three, and bookings are essential. The sunrise and day experiences are open to guests aged five and older. Maunga Hikurangi Tours states that it is the only tour company authorised to drive up the mountain.
