The Municipal Association of Victoria is the peak representative and advocacy body for Victoria's 79 councils. The MAV was formed in 1879 and the Municipal Association Act 1907 anointed the MAV the official voice of local government in Victoria. Today, the MAV is a driving and influential force behind a strong and strategically positioned local government sector. Our role, broadly speaking is to represent and advocate the interests of local government, lobby for a 'fairer deal' for councils, raise the sector's profile, ensure its long-term security and provide policy advice, strategic advice, capacity building programs and insurance services to local government. The success of the MAV stems from its people and the Association has prided itself on building a quality team of staff and consultants to ensure that the needs of its members are met, and that the MAV is well positioned to fulfil its purpose. About Municipal Association of Victoria
MAV, the Municipal Association of Victoria, is the voice for local government in Victoria and serves as the legislated peak body for the sector. Representing council members, MAV offers a wide range of services and support to its members. Under the umbrella of what they do, MAV provides diverse business services to its council members.
These services include specialized policy and advocacy, governance and legislative advice, sector development, insurance, and procurement services. MAV's policy and advocacy work covers various areas such as COVID-19 response, emergency management, environment and water, financial sustainability, planning and building, public health and safety, social and community services, and transport and infrastructure. Furthermore, MAV organizes up to 150 events annually that cater to councillors and council officers, ranging from in-house workshops to national conferences with expert speakers.
They also publish news updates relevant to Victorian councils and lead sector-wide campaigns. Through their activities, MAV contributes to the improvement of the lives of all Victorians, and they welcome individuals who want to support their valuable work.
