Welcome to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and create unforgettable memories. Explore our stunning trails, observe majestic buffalo and elk in their natural habitat, and experience a sea of colorful wildflowers. Established in 1944, Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to preserving the Kansas prairies and educating people about its unique ecosystem.
The refuge, located along the Kansas Prairie Trail Scenic Byway, spans 2560 acres of rolling prairie land, including tall bluffs, wooded creek bottoms, and Dakota Sandstone deposits. It provides a protected habitat for diverse plant and animal species, offering opportunities for research, education, and recreation. The Friends of Maxwell, in collaboration with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, work tirelessly to promote prairie stewardship and provide educational tours and events.
Volunteers play a crucial role in leading tours, organizing events, and maintaining facilities.
