The Manitoba Antique Association (MAA) is a club for people who share an interest in antiques, founded in 1967. Its origins date to the previous year, when Russell Pawley and Sheila Launenon discussed creating a place where enthusiasts could meet, admire antiques, and help preserve them. A newspaper advertisement invited interested people to attend, and the response set the club’s formation in motion. The first meeting was advertised in the Winnipeg Free Press on February 22, 1967, and held later that week.
The association fosters learning and community through regular meetings, which welcome guests. A longstanding highlight is “show and tell,” introduced in 1972, when a member or guest gives a talk or presents a display related to a collection or area of interest. Meetings conclude informally with refreshments, offering attendees time to connect. The MAA also reflects Manitoba heritage through its emblem, the Red River Cart, chosen by members in 1969. Its activities and gatherings provide a forum for sharing knowledge, appreciating collections, and supporting the preservation of antiques.
