The Media Archaeology Lab (MAL), founded in 2009 by Associate Professor Lori Emerson, is a unique research space located on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. Distinguished by its commitment to preserving and showcasing historical media technologies, MAL spans over 12 decades of media history, from magic lanterns and typewriters to early personal computers and digital literature created on vintage hardware. This cross-disciplinary lab serves as a hands-on environment for experimental research and teaching, welcoming both the CU Boulder community and the public to explore its extensive catalog of functioning media artifacts.
Supported by various organizations, including the College of Media, Communication and Information and notable donors like Brad Feld and Google, MAL emphasizes the motto, “the past must be lived so that the present can be seen. ” Visitors can engage with the lab through in-person visits, virtual tours, or by joining its mailing list for updates on events and activities. The lab is largely volunteer-run and encourages advance notice for group visits
