Medical Mutts Service Dogs Inc. is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit that trains rescue dogs to support people with medical and psychiatric disabilities. Serving clients nationwide, the organization combines evidence-based training with a mission to strengthen collaboration between dogs and people through research, education, and ethical practices. Its work has supported more than 300 service dog teams.
Medical Mutts offers fully trained service dogs for assistance at home and in public, as well as lower-cost in-home support dogs trained to provide alerts, grounding, routines, and emotional support. Dogs may be trained to help with epilepsy, diabetes, psychiatric disabilities, POTS, hearing loss, migraines, and other needs, including specialized seizure and diabetic alerts.
People can also work with Medical Mutts to train their own dogs. Options include private coaching, group and puppy classes, online and in-person instruction, and board-and-train programs. The organization helps clients assess whether a dog is a suitable candidate and provides guidance through the service dog process. Training typically takes at least six months, depending on the dog and program.
