Medieval Coventry

Medieval Coventry is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to helping people explore the city’s medieval history in engaging and accessible ways. Its work focuses on Coventry’s development from the Norman Conquest in 1066 to the Dissolution of the Monasteries around 1540, with particular interest in the city’s heyday from the mid-14th to the early 16th century. The charity combines traditional historical research and interpretation with digital technologies to bring the medieval city to life.

Its projects include a virtual reality model of Spon Street, once a medieval industrial suburb, and a downloadable app-based walking tour of Coventry’s medieval treasures, launched in 2022. Medieval Coventry also produces publications, including a historical map created with the Historic Towns Trust, and organises conferences, exhibitions and displays. These explore subjects such as the St Mary’s Hall tapestry, Coventry’s ceremonial civic sword, the city’s built environment, and the medieval Doom Painting at Holy Trinity Church. Through these resources and activities, the charity shares Coventry’s lesser-known past with residents and visitors.
