Melbourne Freestyle is an ice-skating instruction and community program based at OβBrien Icehouse in Docklands, Melbourne. It introduces freestyle skating to local skaters, drawing on a creative, free-form approach that emphasizes personal expression, balance, edge work and movement rather than competition. The style is compared with hip hop on ice, in contrast to the more structured feel of figure skating.
The program offers classes for a range of abilities. Beginner-intermediate lessons build essential skills such as balance, edges, forward and backward movement, and stopping. Freestyle Level 1 introduces initial freestyle moves and focuses on weight transfer and balance. Level 2 develops those skills with more advanced moves, edges, stops and an introduction to choreography. Level 3 brings the elements together, helping skaters practise challenging stops and familiar tricks before exploring their own style.
Lead instructor Daniel Shaw has skated since early childhood, taught for over a decade and held formal teaching and skating qualifications.
