Mercators Nachbarn is a Duisburg-based history initiative and part of the Mercator-Gesellschaft Duisburg. It aims to bring the city’s past, particularly Duisburg during the era of the 16th-century scholar Gerhard Mercator, to public attention in an engaging and accessible way. The group offers guided walks through Duisburg’s Old Town and historical site visits, as well as lectures, performances in period costume, and theatrical presentations.
Its offerings include a staged reading about key episodes in Mercator’s life and a book on notable contemporaries of the 16th century. The initiative also shares information about the city’s history, Mercator and the arts, the scholar network of his time, and the proposed Mercator House on Oberstraße, whose construction it supports. In its work, Mercators Nachbarn collaborates with the Cultural and City History Museum, the Duisburg City Archive, and other people interested in local history.
Tours can be arranged for groups, families, friends, clubs, and school classes. The initiative also publishes event updates through its website and newsletter
