The Mercury Phoenix Trust is a charitable organization founded in 1992 by Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor, together with the band’s manager Jim Beach, following the tribute concert for Freddie Mercury. It honors the singer, who died from HIV/AIDS in 1991, by supporting the global fight against HIV and AIDS. Drawing on Queen and Freddie Mercury’s legacy, the Trust raises funds and backs education, awareness and practical support for affected communities.
The Trust has provided £18 million to more than 1,800 projects across 57 countries. It predominantly funds carefully assessed and vetted smaller organizations working at grassroots level, often in communities underserved by governments, larger NGOs and markets. Its supported work includes outreach education and HIV awareness, as well as services for people living with HIV and vulnerable women and children. The Trust also invites the public to contribute through donations, fundraising activities and its Freddie for a Day campaign, held around Freddie Mercury’s birthday on September 5.
