About Wayne State University School of Medicine
Wayne State University School of Medicine, based in Detroit, supports medical education scholarship through its annual Medical Education Research and Innovation (MERI) Conference. The event brings together students, residents, staff, and faculty to present completed and in-progress research and innovative educational projects. Its focus is on questions about how medicine is taught, learned, and assessed, including learner development, curriculum design, evaluation, technology, well-being, and quality improvement.
MERI also showcases curriculum innovations designed to address current needs in medical education, with examples spanning patient safety, interprofessional learning, health and wellness, and service learning. The conference welcomes first-time research participants as well as more experienced contributors, and recognizes outstanding presentations and posters with awards. Its program includes research presentations, a keynote speaker, and, beginning in 2026, hands-on workshops led by students, faculty, and staff. The 2026 conference will explore the impact of artificial intelligence on undergraduate medical education while accepting submissions on other medical education topics.
